Overview

The GDN (Global Database Network) is a feature for Alibaba Cloud cloud native database PolarDB MySQL in version 8.0. It federates and connects 1 primary PolarDB cluster and up to 4 secondary (read-only) clusters (if you need more secondary cluster, please submit a ticket) into a single PolarDB GDN.

Topics

In the PolarDB GDN, application client still can use the cluster endpoint of each PolarDB cluster, but the GDN has the following logic to benefit the business application on top of it:

  • In the GDN, all the DDL/DCL/IUD (INSERT, DELETE, UPDATE) statements are routed to the primary cluster PolarDB;
  • SELECT statements are routed to the local cluster either primary or secondary, which depends on the specific cluster you connect to;
  • Primary cluster will replicate all the data changes to other secondary clusters with the replication latency less than 2 seconds;
  • Each PolarDB cluster within the GDN can be scaled horizontally or vertically and configured with specific parameter values according to the business workload.

If your need databases deployment across multiple sites, but was struggling with managing the data synchronization between or among multiple database instances, PolarDB GDN should be a good choice for you.
