QA section

  • 1. Q: When I move my data between different DB end points via DTS, can you help confirm that I can do cross-source transmission? Thank you!

A: Yes absolutely, DTS supports both heterogenous and homogeneous movement across supported end points. The key is that your applications that depend on those database end points can have minimal impact during migration (DTS will automatically create schema objects in your target DB, mapping to those in the source DB, etc.)

  • 2. Q: Does Alibaba cloud offer any database products similar to AWS Athena? some of our applications were built on Athena + S3, would be great if the migration experience could be seamless.

A: We have a product called Alibaba Cloud Data Lake Analytics (DLA). Very similar to AWS Athena, DLA is an interactive analytics service that utilizes serverless architecture, and is capable of reading multiple data sources directly. with DLA + OSS, your applications can be migrated to Alibaba cloud seamlessly.

  • 3. Q: Does PolarDB support No SQL and unstructured data??

A: PolarDB doesnt support NoSQL/unstructured data, it's good at handling transactional data. for unstructured data, we have products like Redis, MongoDB, all managed by the same RDS control panel.

  • 4. Q: How long does it take to migrate an on-premise database to Alibaba? it's depend on size?

A: There are two parts in this process: 1. migrating data (this can take a few mins to a few hours, depending on your data volume), your application is fully functional during this period (still pointing to your on-prem DB); 2. switch your application, pointing to the cloud DB, this can be done within seconds usually

  • 5. Q: Your demo shows migration within your cloud. What about migrating from other cloud or even local server?

A: absolutely yes:) thats the main purpose of using DTS: migrating from on-prem sources, or DBs on another cloud, to alibaba cloud.

  • 6. Q: if i use mysql rds and pgsql, can i sync with my on premise? because I built it with a master database using RDS and the slides are on premise.

A: you can sync your on-prem databases with cloud databases using DTS, the source and target databases don't have to be the same type (MySQL to postgres for example); but if the question is about hosting a master on the cloud while running slaves on-prem, things like failover and network could be problematic, it is usually not recommended.
